apt locking up and slow apt sources after fresh install

Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

After fresh installation I went to install restricted hardware drivers through the notification icon. When the dialogue box popped up saying that it was searching for available drivers, it didn't do anything, even after I clicked cancel, it would just sit there. I force quit the application, and when trying to install a package through apt normally, it said that the apt database was locked. With no other applications using apt, and not knowing how to unlock the apt db manually, I restarted it. After it booted up again, I tried to install a package manually again with apt, and it would just sit there trying to connect to the server(I think). But then I used the "find best server" feature in synaptic's repository configuration, and then the package installed fine, and restricted driver installed without a problem.

I think that it would be a good idea to have the installation of the system invoke the "find best server" function and update the apt accordingly (Instead of users trying to figure out why nothing is installing, and fix it on their own)

I don't see a bug in APT here if your mirror is too slow. APT furthermore does not configure any sources, that's done by the installer.

Changed in apt (Ubuntu):
status: Triaged → Invalid
