I'm not entirely sure what is going on your system but it fails with sort not understanding --version-sort - this has been introduced in coreutils 7.0, released in 2008. Your coreutils are 8.25 however, so I have no idea what's going on.

* Did you install another sort binary?
* Are you using a weird shell where sort is a builtin for /bin/sh?

Maybe setting env LC_ALL=C is needed when using sort?
