I suspect that this problem came from new apt version :
apt (0.7.6ubuntu1) gutsy; urgency=low

...

  * merged apt--sha256 branch to fully support the new
sha256 checksums in the Packages and Release files

Hi,

I believe this bug should be assigned to "apt" instead of "apt-mirror".

FYI, I have experimented a similar problem, although just with some repositories.

Using "aptitude update" instead of "apt-get update" works for me.

I also have this problem with apt-get, but only with one repository.
"Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/gutsy/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages.bz2 Hash Sum mismatch"
I also do not encounter this problem using aptitude.

The aptitude workaround worked, but after that it is still not posible to install packages from multiverse

I also can't install any multiverse (e.h. mplayer) with aptitude, so for me it seems aptitude doesn't give the error message, but doesn't work also

The bug is that apt-mirror doesn't support the new checksums.

Changed in apt:
status: New → Invalid
Changed in apt-mirror:

Apt-mirror needs to be patched/updated to support the new hash/checksums.

Today the problem went away. So it seems to be resolved.

@jeroenvrp : we do not talk about the same bug.
I talk about using a mirror made with apt-mirror. Your problem is for official repository that have effectively been resolved.

Sorry wrong bug, as for the fix for my problem just moving away from the japanese mirror to the official one, erase the issue

I get this problem but not when I do `apt-get update` but trying to install specific packages, (eg. "dialog" package, result below). First I was using my local (Polish) ubuntu mirrors and all the packages had corrupted hashes. When I switched to main repository, only some of the packages get this error.

$ sudo apt-get install dialog

this dosent seem to be a problem with apt-mirror, it seems to be an issue with the particular you are updating from, marking as invalid
