Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

When I open Synaptic, the index reconstruction of the quick search starts and update-apt-xapian-index uses a lot of the CPU. My computer becomes very slow for a while.

update-apt-xapian-index wouldn't start when we open Synaptic, but should be planned for example with cron and be launched with a low priority, because it makes the computer go very slower.

I've a similar problem related on update-apt-xapian-index: few minutes after startup of my old PC (when it goes idle, or during web browsing) the update-apt-xapian-index process starts and get all the CPU.
I think that on modern PC the process finish in seconds, but on older machine like mine the RAM is limited so swapping on hard disk get PC unusable.

I also have the same issue as Bepy, it uses 37% of my CPU uses a ridiculous amount of the IO and just slows the machine way down. I'm not actually sure what it does but I have removed it from /usr/sbin/ and my machine doesn't grind to a halt so often.
