Bug Description

Tried to install Gutsy using the alternate disk, and installed stuck for hours "Configuring apt - Scanning for mirror...", unplugging network cable did not help. Also, the system was overheating, probably processor was maxed out (no idea why), so I had to shut down.

Tried again next day and eventually went past "Scanning for mirror".

This is pretty bad, if I install from CD I would expect to be able to skip the mirror checking (and it should also time out on its own after a reasonable time). Also, while scanning for mirrors the processor should not max out.

You can also reproduce this by unplugging the network cable during installation, once your network connection is configured and the time is set (when is starts installing the basic system).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in debian-installer.

I did try to find the proper package, but I had no idea what to chose.

Searched for both "install" and "installer" and there where multiple pages of results. Looked for something that mentions "alternate".

Thanks for your report. I'm collecting similar issues as bug 154095, which should be fixed in Hardy soon.

I've got exactly the same problem as unimatrix. Hanging at 50% when installing 8.10 64-bit in VirtualBox. The network indicator is flashing for quite a while at the start of the "Scanning the mirror" phase but stops when it hits 50%. Using the Australian time zone.

I ran into this bug with ALT install of Ubuntu 9.04 64bit beta as well.... This means I can't ship Ubuntu to my father just yet.

I am seeing the same thing, running Ubuntu 8.04.3 Jeos using KVM virtualization. It eats up 100% CPU, however I can hit ALT-F2 to get to a terminal.

But searching with Google for "scanning the mirror" shows there are others having this problem on non-Virtual machines.

Some have reported success by unplugging the NIC cable, or, by manually fixing a DNS entry before starting the install. I'm getting this error, but the shell at ALT-F2 still lets me ping sites like Google and Yahoo. So, my network works for pings, but there is still some problem at the "scanning the mirror" phase.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Also please do NOT assign yourself to a bug unless you intend to work on developing code to fix the issue. Thank you.

The Kubuntu 10.04 disc still suffered from this issue. I cannot test with 10.10 at the moment.
