Bug Description
Binary package hint: apt-file
After installing apt-file via any of the GUI package managers, a dialog box will propose to run apt-file update for the first time. This fails silently if a caching/proxy mechanism is being used (such as apt-cacher-ng). The GUI update mechanism should trap the error and inform the user about it instead of failing silently.
I've reported a separate bug about not recognizing a proxy is in place (#767061), this bug is specifically about the lack of a UI-reported error.
