I have the same problem. I have currently one client updating and the CPU usage on the caching server is showing as 100% for apt-cacher in 'top'.

I have this exact same problem, I am running apt-cacher version on jaunty server:
apt-cacher_1.6.7ubuntu4_all.deb
high cpu load for new version of apt-cacher.
99% cpu.

and downgrading to version:

apt-cacher_1.5.5_all.deb

Reverting to 1.5.5 puts the cpu load back at 5%.

Repro Steps:
install apt-cacher.
run deboostrap against it.
debootstrap --verbose --variant=buildd --arch i386 intrepid /var/chroot/intrepid http://blah:3142/apt-cacher/us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

Populates the cache.
Run debootstrap again.
monitor cpu with top.
downgrade version.
monitor cpu with top.

I believe this is fixed in apt-cacher 1.6.10 which has just been uploaded in Debian

I have apt-cacher-ng version 0.7.2-1ubuntu1 on kubuntu 12.04.

CPU load keeps on 100% and does not go down even after hours.
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
960 apt-cach 20 0 144m 3796 1524 S 100 0.1 1163:05 apt-cacher-ng

Replicated after reboot and doing apt-get updata; apt-get upgrade # on another computer, which is using this proxy.

apt-cacher-ng is a different package altogether.

I don't think apt-cacher is even maintained anymore.
