Bug Description

When running ubuntu-bug and sending the bug report, the default web browser setting is ignored. It just launches Firefox, even though Chromium is my default web browser. Probably because everything changed from gtk2 to gtk3?

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I am having this problem too. Although Firefox is my default browser and it wants to open rekonq which isn't even installed.

Affected as well. Only the other way around - FF is default and ubuntu-bug launches Chrome automatically.

Same phenomenon can be observed when using Ubuntu software center - seems to be a gnome-inherent thing?

Still present in 12.10.

I'm not sure if this is the same bug but in 13.04a apport ignores the default browser settings also in LXDE, choosing Chromium-browser over any that might have been set as the preferred application in preferences.

For me apport has suddenly started invoking chromium instead of firefox (which is what it has done until today). No change to settings by me. Running saucy beta. Default browser in System Settings > Details is unchanged at Firefox.
Does anyone know which settings apport uses?

I found a link that suggested that apport uses root privileges when reporting and hence does not use the users settings. Instead it uses the update-alternatives settings. Run
update-alternatives --get-selections
to see what gnome-www-browser and x-www-browser are set to. Then use
sudo update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser
and
sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
to set it to your preferred browser.
Mine was set to chromium-browser, possibly an update to this hijacked the alternatives.
This fix has worked for me, so this may be an invalid bug.

set update-alternatives for gnome-www-browser, x-www-browser, www-browser to the correct browser (custom firefox build) and then made the new browser set itself as the 'default browser' in its preferences and suddenly this problem went away for me.
