Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

I've been running 11.04 Beta1 for a couple of days using the new unity desktop, and was surprised to notice that no bug reports came up (despite getting segfaults for a couple of games in the gnome-games package). Turns out this is because they're not getting through in the Unity notification system. Upon logging into the Ubutnu Classic session, the system promptly vomited out a dozen or so crash reports that occurred while running unity.

It works fine for other people, could you add your .xsession-errors from a session having the issue?

I'm attaching the xsession errors file from my last login. I've checked that for me, this is repeatable:

Step 1: Log into Ubuntu Unity desktop
Step 2: Run program lightsoff (from the gnome-games package) since I know it segfaults every time. (More correctly I guess it's seed that segfaults)
Notice that no crash report shows up.
Step 3: Log out, and log back into Ubuntu Classic. In the notification area, there will be the crash symbol (red w/ ! mark); clicking on it will give me a report that Seed has crashed.
(In this particular case I restarted rather than logging out, since I'd just applied updates. I copied the xsession errors file just before restarting.)

Incidentally, I also have update-notifier set up under the old scheme where an icon appears in the notification area when updates are available (I prefer this to having update-manager pop up). At present this icon also only appears in an Ubuntu Classic session.

I was able to solve the problem by white-listing apport so that its notification icon is allowed to appear in the Unity notification area. Classic still uses the old notification area, which is why there were no problems there.
Actually, I just white-listed everything (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10650333#post10650333 #12) since I've never found (in 4-5 years of running Ubuntu) that my notification area got too cluttered. I can now get update notifications as well (without running apt-get update) since the update notifier is also once again allowed to have its icon appear, and I don't believe I run any other program that uses the notification area by default.
