Bug Description

NOTE:
This is also an issue if you install a package from another repo and then switch your mirrors to one that hasn't been updated yet.

Binary package hint: apport

Let's say I'm using a ppa version of xserver-xorg-video-intel but I want to report a bug against the version in the main repo.

In order to file a bug, I have to uninstall the ppa version, install the repo version and then hope for the best with ubuntu-bug.

Especially true when one frequent response an ubuntu developer makes to a bug reporter is "Please try our updated version in our ppa".

Agreed; apport should provide an equivalent of APPORT_IGNORE_OBSOLETE_PACKAGES for such cases.

Still a problem in Lucid. I would love to see a fix for this, maybe something like this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/589771

This is still a big bad problem with trusty. In some cases ubuntu-bug reports a package as not being a genuie Ubuntu package, but the package *IS* a genuie Ubuntu package! It is available within the Ubuntu repositories and it is, as far as I can confirm, up to date.
Such packages shall never be mocked on as not being a genuie Ubuntu package!

Second: in a lot of cases, if you report an error you are adviced to install a newer version form some Ubuntu ppa to test wether an error is gone in a fixed version or not. If you later on try to report a new error with this package you are told this wont be an genuie Ubuntu package. At least bad behaviour.

I'd expect to see some information from which repository the package came and maybe the version available in the main repositories reporting a downgrade necessary to stay up to date with the latest Ubuntu versions.

And the second I expect: ubuntu-bug handling errors reported against a ppa version over to the maintainer of the ppa – not just plain refusing to do anything, leaving you alone after someone told you to upgrade to a ppa version to make sure the bug isn't fixed in a newer upstream version!
