Bug Description

The following error:

https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/4b288186d25cf35ebdcaf541459b40921fba87ba

Contains this in the stacktrace:

#7 0xb11d99f1 in unity::IconLoader::Impl::IconLoaderTask::LoaderJobFunc(_GTask*, void*, void*, _GCancellable*) () from /srv/daisy.ubuntu.com/production/cache/Ubuntu 14.04/cache-QumZAJ/sandbox/usr/lib/compiz/libunityshell.so
No symbol table info available.

However, the corresponding bug in Launchpad:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1047517

Contains this in the retraced stacktrace:

#7 0xb33484c9 in unity::IconLoader::Impl::IconLoaderTask::LoaderJobFunc (job=0xb2ff4e0, canc=0x0, data=0xb2ff584) at /build/buildd/unity-6.4.0/unity-shared/IconLoader.cpp:467
        file = {object_ = 0xb4eef518}
        contents = {<boost::noncopyable_::noncopyable> = {<No data fields>}, string_ = 0x0}
        length = 0
        task = 0xb2ff584

One particular difference between the two reports is that the retracing in errors was done against 14.04 and the retracing in Launchpad was done with 13.10.

Martin - what version of gdb are the launchpad retracers using?

Brian: The Apport retracers have run in a quantal chroot until May 26. Since then they've run in a trusty chroot.

I downloaded the attachments from unity bug reports in Launchpad since May 26 and found a couple of crashes where there is no symbol table information available for libunityshell.so, so perhaps this is related to the trusty version of gdb?

I installed the utopic version of gdb on a trusty system and tried to retrace a unity crash (OOPS ID 19635006-f2e1-11e3-bff8-fa163e707a72) I found in the error tracker's swift storage. Retracing that crash using the Utopic version of gdb (7.7.1-0ubuntu3) I still received "No symbol table info available." about libunityshell.so.
