Bug Description

I am running Ubuntu 12.05, and most things work fine.
However I am having a bug with the updater, which can't determine which package and fails to report, so I have been trying to report that bug manually, so:

I hit Alt+F2 and typed "ubuntu-bug".

I get the Apport window asking what kind of problem I want to report.

If I choose "ubuntu-release-upgrader-core" a window appears saying it is gathering information which then goes away and leaves me with nothing.

If I choose "other problem", I get a window saying I need to specify a package or PID, but there was no place to do that, and I don't know them anyway, and putting my best guesses as arguments to ubuntu-bug just gives me a dialog saying the package name is invalid and it couldn't determine the package or PID.

So these tools give me no way to report the bug I am seeing, which I will report separately since it is a different bug (update-apt-xapian-index fails on startup).

Oh, in case it isn't clear, what I am expecting, is that the "upgrader core" option would want more info from me, or at least leave me with a dialog explaining if it is just gathering all info it might need. For both that and the "other problem" option, I would expect to be asked to give some more information do describe the bug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1415146/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

You can use "ubuntu-bug update-apt-xapian-index" in a terminal to report your bug using apport.

After the data collection you should get a window which shows the collected information, with a button to send it. Don't you get this? If so, maybe it crashes for you -- can you open a terminal and run

  ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core

let it collect, and copy&paste the output there? If there's no window, I suspect some traceback.
