I am not sure I follow you. At least on Feisty, vmware-server is installable, and has no broken dependencies (I just installed it).

Can you please provide mode details & Ubuntu version?

ahh, did some digging, requires both universe and multiverse to be included. is it possible we could move the meta package to the same repo that actually has the restricted kernel module in question? Also, it depends on an older version of libssl that is in universe, could that be duplicated in commercial possibly?

Rob, what Ubuntu version are you using, and what packages are involved? I cannot find any VMWare packages in restricted modules.

post mortem: various depends are satisfied, but only if you enable universe AND multiverse

I had the same problem with vmware player, fixed by enabling multiverse. An out of date vmware-player-kernel-modules (and presumably also vmware-server-kernel-modules) exists in universe, causing the confusion from broken dependencies.
