Bug Description

Following an upgrade to breezy, we've been having problems with several
application using gtk.
When using the file chooser to select a directory, any selection causes the file
chooser and the originating program to freeze.
If instead of using the file chooser, I type in the address straight into the
original dialog, there is no problem.

Examples:
In ajuta (1.2), use the import project wizard. In the file chooser dialog, click
"browse" - the gtk file chooser will open. Select any directoy, and the program
will freeze. Typing in the value instead of clicking browse works perfectly.

In meld diff viewer (1.0.0), click file->New. In any of the dailog (file
compare, svn compare, cvs compare, directory compare), clock "browse". Selecting
anything will cause a crash.

On all machines we have gtk-2.0, libgtk2.0-dev, glade and all the subsequent
required packages, using the latest offered by synaptic.

If I am omitting any required information, please let me know.

Thanks for your bug. Does it happen with gedit by example? Do you have non-local
bookmark to your ~/.gtk-bookmarks file?

It does not happen in Gedit. However, there is no equivalent dialog in gedit
where you can click browse and then choose a folder (not sure if it makes a
differance).

The only file matching the pattern ~/.gtk* that I have is
"/home/yony/.gtkrc-1.2-gnome2". Perhaphs I should have mentioned, the local
folders were stored prior to the upgrade to breezy, so if there was a file that
should be created by setup to the local folder, I do not have it.

It might be tedious research, but you could try to find out, which files/dirs
are missing by looking at the output of strace -e open, stat <program> and
look, which of those are not available. Sorry, but this is a bit of corner case.

Unfortunatly, the bug is on our machines at work, so I don't have time to do
very extensive verification on this.
I've attached the last portion of the output from the crash from both meld and
anjuta - I hope this helpes a bit.
If you need more info, let me know, I'll see what I can do.

Could you try changing the Icon Theme?

I've tried changing the icon theme - Still same problem.

Attached is the output from the run witht the new theme. I've also added more
detail to the trace, maybe it will give you some more insight into what is
going on.

Could you get a valgrind log of that issue and copy it to a comment? You have to
install the valgrind package for that and to run "valgrind app", it slows things
a lot but should give some indication on the free issue

I would re-dub the bug report to an Anjuta bug. The meld issue is https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/meld/+bug/2558 which was fixed in Dapper already. And Anjuta doesn't use the standard gtk file selector.

You might be able to work around this bug by running Applications/System/Configuration Editor and changing /desktop/gnome/interface/file_chooser_backend
 from 'gnome_vfs' to 'gtk+'.

Does this still happen to you?
