Anacron fails in virtual machines like VMWare

Bug #237303 reported by Frank Breitling
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
anacron (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) in VMWare on MS Windows, since suspend to RAM is broken for HP nc6120 laptops ( Then by suspending in Windows I can work around the linux bug.
However, now anacron is not executed by the Ubuntu resume scripts any more and therefore does not work if the system is not running at 7:30 a.m. (/etc/cron.d/anacron).

Proposed solution:
As suggested by angkor at
solve the problem by adding the following script to /etc/cron.hourly:

/usr/sbin/anacron -s

Looking at the attachments in this bug report, I noticed that one was flagged as a patch incorrectly. A patch contains changes to an Ubuntu package that will resolve a bug, since this was not one I've unchecked the patch flag for it. In the future keep in mind the definition of a patch. You can learn more about what qualifies as a patch at Thanks!
This obviously does not mean that the attacment is not useful, but it is more a workaround for your specific problem, which must be investigated.

Merging with the other "not run if suspended/off between 6am and 8am" bug - while this one is older, the other has a suggested workaround
