Bug Description

Binary package hint: amsn

amsn seems to crash xorg when you try and change the display picture while compiz is enabled. I disabled the visual effects and it works fine. I put it on and try to change it crashes. So definitely something wrong here.

Yes, I too have compiz + ubuntu gutsy + nvidia and with all amsn versions that I tried (0.97 and many svn) the X server crashes when I try to change my personal picture.

I just discovered that I have this problem only with 169.12 nvidia driver. With the 100.14.19 nvidia driver (that of ubuntu gutsy repositories) there is no problem. :)

Same thing. It was crashing in gutsy, and it's crashing in hardy too.

DJ_DEF (dj-def) wrote :

you have to install an older nvidia driver, the new one causes this problem... with 100.14.19 for me it's all right!

XmIsTeR (xmisterhu) wrote :

That's not a real solution :)
It's better for me to turn off compiz while changing the picture, than installing an older driver.

you're right :) it's not a real solution but it shows that the problem could be a driver problem and not a software problem

I've found a solution to this problem in a forum, go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=10894&package_id=10452 and download your version of tk, in my case tk8.5, untar it and look for a file named tkfbox.tcl , then I replaced the one in /usr/share/tcltk/tk8.5 (or whatever version you people have) with the one I downloaded, restart my computer (although I think it's not necessary) and solved this problem. the forum is http://dreamlinuxforums.org/index.php?topic=170.0.
best regards.
just in case you ask, I use hardy 32 bits.

ps: sorry for the bad english

Possibile FIX here:

It appears to be a bug in the TK library.

The problem is that since the a5 stable version until there is at least one alpha and three betas that there are changes in that file (tkfbox.tcl)

Some of these changes are fixes for we can not simply replace a file on the other...

Can you specify which version (closer to the present) tk no-show this bug?

Yup, having the same problem. Graphics are NVidia 8400 GS (driver is 169.12), also using Compiz and aMSN. On 8.04 Hardy 32bit.

X Window System crashes when changing display picture in aMSN.

Tried llove's fix (& Scorp, same thing, cheers) - replacing the tkfbox.tcl file (in the .tar.gz, under Library)- but can't work out how to get read/write permissions for the \tk directory. :( Guess I'll Google it in a sec...

Hmm... not as easy as that, it would seem. Could anyone here post how to replace the file when the directory's permissions are root only? Je suis un n00b :D

I've managed to fix it by using NVidia driver version 173.14.09.

Possibly the drivers are to blame?

With the 17X.xx versions of the Nvidia driver this problem disappear.
However I discovered that this configuration is a possible solution if you don't want to update:

1) Put this in xorg.conf

Option "PixmapCacheSize" "1000000"
Option "AllowSHMPixmaps" "0"

2) Run this command after that X started: nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 (you will need nvidia-settings to run it)
