Thanks for your bug. Does amixer change correctly the volume?

No, amixer does not change the volume correctly, either.

Please attach your amixer output, and describe what amixer syntax you're using.

Here is the demenaded output. What do you mean with "describe the amixer syntax"?

It is pretty interesting. Volume control in Gnome applications like Totem and Rhythmbox works. But changing the volume in Alsamixer or in Gnome Volume Control does not change anything. I will also attach a screenshot of Alsamixer.

That's odd. intel8x0 is softvol'd by default, so you _shouldn't_ be seeing this symptom in a fresh Dapper or Edgy install. Is this symptom reproducible from booting an Edgy desktop cd?

When I boot from the Edgy desktop CD, the volume is shown to be muted but when I listen to music I can hear it at full volume. Modifying the channel in ALSA does not have any effect regarding the volume.

I can select two devices in gnome-volume-control; A SIS one and a CMEDIA one if that helps.

I am on a Toshiba Satellite on which I was running Feisty Fawn with NO problems. Upon upgrading last night to Gutsy Gibbon, my sound went berserk. My Gnome taskbar volume controller has no effect on the volume at all; even when muted, I can still hear sound. My maximum volume is also very low now, since the update. Media player volume controllers do have some effect, but again, none bring the volume up to a normal level. My laptop speakers are just barely audible, but if I use externals, and set them on the maximum volume, I get about 1/4 or less of my normal/previous sound capacity. Nearly everything else in Gutsy is great, aside from screwing up my wireless a bit.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 alpha?
