Sound preferences don't keep setting for output volume

Everytime i start the pc i've to unmute and set the output volume control

Could you please state some more information about your system? What version of Ubuntu are you running, and do you have the latest updates installed? Have you tried adjusting volume settings, and checking to see whether they stick accross reboots?
