Could you pleas state what version of Ubuntu you are using? If you are using Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid, could you plesae try playing audio without pulseaudio loaded? To do this, run "pulseaudio -k" from a terminal, and attempt to play audio.

Thanks.

As stated above: intrepid, 8.10.
~/Dokumente/mp3$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=intrepid
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 8.10"

Trying to play an audio file from console (not KDE) works fine - if I start a console in KDE I get this:

:~/Dokumente/mp3$ pulseaudio -k

E: polkit.c: Cannot set UID on session object.
W: ltdl-bind-now.c: Failed to find original dlopen loader.
E: main.c: Failed to kill daemon.
:~/Dokumente/mp3$

pulseaudio is not running (same error message as user root)

In contrast to post from 2008-10-25 there's no sound now.
