Bug Description

Binary package hint: hal

Sound okay until upgrade to Gutsy 7.10. Had sound on VLC and Banshee the day of upgrade in October but none since except for Skype which has incoming and outgoing sound. Sound on motherboard SIS-7012. Firefox browser Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071204 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.11. Using USB Plantronic Headset SP500. Sound not muted. Did sound test, tried on all options, ALSA, USB, SIS7012 etc and received error message on SIS7012 and USB but no error on ALSA and OSS but still no sound. I can see the test indicator slide bar but no sound. The error on SIS and USB under Sound Preferences "audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open resource for writing." Using USB Headset. No sound on MP3 songs in computer. No sound on video like Youtube, news sites, popup video advertising. Use same computer, boot to Windows XP from a separate hard drive and sound okay. Nothing muter under Sounds or Alsamixer. Audio devices detected in Device Manager. Using Rhythmbox, Audacity, Exaile, Banshee, Sound Juicer, Totem, gxine, Mplayer etc all show music lists and slider bar shows music is playing, but no sound. Backed up Gutsy and reloaded then updated but no sound. Tried shutdown, restart, powered off computer, reinstall music players, music libraries and did updates. Unplugged the peripherals, usb printer, usb scanner, usb headset then plugged in just headset and rebooted. Tried to run music players from terminal as administrator but no sound. Can download podcasts and play on portable MP3 player but can't hear them from computer. Different problem but now the hardware won't play music CD's.

Petri,
I logged on to Skype.
Clicked on to Main Menu.
Clicked on Options.
Clicked on Sound Devices on the left panel.
Under Options for Sound In, Out and Ringing -
Configured for Headset (hw; Headset,0) for my computer.
Sound started working in Skype.

Made sure nothing muted.
In Terminal mode try alsamixer or gnome-alsamixer to see if anything is
muted.

Hope this works for you!
