On 11.10 the microphone works perfectly, before upgrade to 12.04, the microphone stopped works.

I found a solution:

1) I installed gnome-alsamixer

2) Under the 2 Capture options, I turned "rec." on.
I have no idea what this means (record?), but it solved the problem.

Alsamixer (commandline ) DOES NOT HAVE such an option. Alsamixer needs to be fixed.

This should be considered a major problem, microphones nowadays are essential and many people will dump Ubuntu if it cannot work.

Same issue for me with also a Realtek ALC883. The microphone doesn't work anymore after upgrade to 12.04
The 2 capture options were already turn on so #4 doesn't help for me and not so keen on redoing a fresh install ...

it is bug of driver , after the rear mic jack and line in retasked as output. rear mic jack and line in jack kcontrol should always return false

when driver change the pin ctl of rear mic jack or line in jack from IN to OUTit should also change the value of jack detect kcontrol to false
