[OptiPlex 745, Analog Devices AD1983, Green Line Out, Rear] No sound on some applications

I was unable to play the BBC Music player on live material ( previous programs ran OK ) and the Application "TuneIn" would not run. I have been unable to install VLC from Snyptic or the software center, lists a million unsatisfied dependancies.
