Idk if this will help you, but for me somehow the kernel module was disabled, and by doing:
sudo modprobe snd_intel8x0
it is fixed for me.

This release of Ubuntu is no longer receiving maintenance updates. If this is still an issue on a maintained version of Ubuntu please let us know.
