Hello, I would like to join the problem. On my computer (TP Lenovo R61i) the crackling sounds similar like after this command:
aplay -d 1 /dev/zero

Workaround for me:
echo -e '#!/bin/sh\namixer set Master mute' | sudo tee /etc/init.d/mute_sound
sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/mute_sound
sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/mute_sound /etc/rc6.d/S45mute_sound

If it doesn't work for you, remove both created files:
sudo rm /etc/init.d/mute_sound
sudo rm /etc/rc6.d/S45mute_sound
