Bug Description

ALSA HDA, Laptop Speaker sound does not disable with headphones connected.

Also, I'm not sure why you installed that package. I would recommend removing that package and reinstalling the kernel image package to restore the original kernel module:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-`uname -r`

Add this line to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire-8930g

Sound should (hopefuly) work properly on reboot.

I have discovered that when the headphones are plugged in on boot up the speakers do not work if the headphones are unplugged, but when the speakers work the headphone jack doesn't mute them when the headphones are plugged in.

Only have Stereo sound. The Acer Apsire 8930 has a 5.1 surround system.

If I set the model=auto I can choose the sound mode and the speaker test works find, but the headphone jack detect fails.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

I have just installed a fresh version of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS final release and I STILL have this annoying issue with the SOUND. What have you done to a once working system in 11.10???? Go back to the drawing board and rethink what you have done. So annoyed.

The only way I can hear through headphones and not the speakers is if I restart the OS, but when I unplug the headphones there is no speaker sound. Restart the OS without the headphones in speakers work, plug in the headphones and speakers don't mute. Seems to be a Jack Detect issue.

For an LTS release this should never of happened.

I have added a screenshot with Headphones plugged in. From here you can see there is only one Analog audio output. The jack port on my Computer doubles up as a digitial out as well. Could there be a conflict with HDA Intel Analogue and Digital detection???

We shouldn't have to manually setup the jack ports ourselves, out of the box from 10.04 to 11.10 everything was working just fine. I would not expect a noob to setup the jack ports. They would uninstall Ubuntu and go back to something that does work.

If I check Options Set model=auto (codec Realtek ALC888) it began work properly but center speaker works only.

Shanekpiper (shanekpiper) wrote :

Ok I have done some more digging, I set model=auto and everything worked fine even the Jack detected the mic and muted the speakers, but as I have 5.1 surround system built in I was only able to get sound from the front left & front right speakers. The other speakers where displayed in the test sound screen, but there was no sound despite being at maximum volume.

I installed alsamixer and opened it in terminal and noticed there was an Auto Mute swtich it was displaying as enabled so I turned it off and the original error retunred. I then enabled it again and it when away.

I removed the Set model=auto and rebooted my computer only to be greated once more with the original error, but I had full 5.1 sound again. On opening the alsamixer in terminal againe I noticed to my amazement that the Auto Mute is nowhere to be seen. Could this be the problem all along??? I am not a Linux coder but I would like to find out if it could be made visable and enabled to see if this annoying bug can be resovled.

Looking at previous bugs from when 10.04 come about the same issue happened with some users back then where alsamixer was not displaying the auto-mute feature.

Any ideas guys on how we could make it reappear would be great...... I think I am on to something here.

My Acer Aspire is a complex beast, with an Nvidia HDMI sound card built in aswell while the Realtek AC889 is a digital out aswell as standard analogue.

Calling all dev/techies..

I have found some Realtek codec-specific mixer control information, I have also attached my work computers alsamixer settings as you can see from this image the auto-mute is present and working fine.

Realtek codecs

* Channel Mode
This is an enum control to change the surround-channel setup,
appears only when the surround channels are available.
It gives the number of channels to be used, "2ch", "4ch", "6ch",
and "8ch". According to the configuration, this also controls the
jack-retasking of multi-I/O jacks.

* Auto-Mute Mode
This is an enum control to change the auto-mute behavior of the
headphone and line-out jacks. If built-in speakers and headphone
and/or line-out jacks are available on a machine, this controls
appears.
When there are only either headphones or line-out jacks, it gives
"Disabled" and "Enabled" state. When enabled, the speaker is muted
automatically when a jack is plugged.

When both headphone and line-out jacks are present, it gives
"Disabled", "Speaker Only" and "Line-Out+Speaker". When
speaker-only is chosen, plugging into a headphone or a line-out jack
mutes the speakers, but not line-outs. When line-out+speaker is
selected, plugging to a headphone jack mutes both speakers and
line-outs.

As you can see from here the jack is being detected, but still the Speakers are not being muted seems like they are tied some how with the headphones, cos when I open alsamixer and mute the speaker controls the headphones mute also, but they stay mute unless I cycle the front speakers, rear speakers and LFE speaker, then the sound returns in both speakers and headphones.

This is not just Acer Aspire 8930 specific. I also have an Acer Aspire which has the Realtek ALC1200 chipset and I had to include options snd-hda-intel model=auto to the alsa-base.conf file to get that one to work correctly.

the event of "plug-in" or "plug-out" seems missing. when i boot up while headphone is plugged in, it works. but then the internernal speakers are not being unmuted when plugging off the headphone.

so it seems, the whole thing works but doesnt get the event to switch mode.

Yes the same happens with me Christian. If you open up a terminal and enter aslamixer you will see that Auto-Mute Mode is missing. This is what triggers the Mute Unmute for the speakers. Im just not sure how the whole thing works myself as im not a coder, but I know one thing it was working fine in 11.10 which suggests to me that it may have something to do with kernal 3.2 vs 3.0, with our realtek chipset.. who knows. Just hope this bug gets more dev eyes on it. Making 12.04 look really bad. :(

You can try press F6 in alsamixer. I have in alsamixer only HDA Intel.

There is two soundcards in your computer, once is the realtek ALC889 and the other is the Nvidia MCP77/78 HDMI for the digital out put. I to am wondering if the alsa divers are not picking the correct soundcard and cant see auto-mute function for the nvidia card and disregards the realtek one.

I did run a test and disabled the Nvidia card and the same issue applies no Auto-Mute.

It is worth mentioning then, that when trying to use the SPDIF digital output, I can hear no sound at all despite having a working digital input speaker system.

What I would like to know is does anyone have a way of enabling the Auto-mute mode so that it is active regardless. This would fix the issue I think. How can it be done and is it possible?

Sorry of my englisch.

A solution till the bug is fixed.

Plug in headset.
Go to audio settings. choose hardware/output profil and go to "no audio" or "off".. dont know whats there in englisch.
After that choose in same line "stereo" and audio works normal in headset. speakers are off.

Same solution if you want audio back to speaker.

Plug of headset.
Go to audio settings. choose hardware/output profil and go to "no audio" or "off".. dont know whats there in englisch.
After that choose in same line "stereo" and audio works speakers are on.

Here it works. hope you too?

hope it works .. ;)

What you show in the image is for Audio Duplex not Audio Mute. This feature you speak of just configures the speakers and input to be configured differently.

I have tested this and still the issue remains where Auto-Mute mod is missing.

Thank you for your efforts dreamon

hmmm sadly not for me. after installing my headphone output didnt work even when i rebooted with plugged-in headphones.

the internal speakers muted when pluggin in the cable, but nothing came out of it. but it seems, that the event of plugging in/out was recognized. so this is definitely a step in the right direction.

OK So this bug has something to do with Kernel 3.2, I have just upgraded the Kernel to 3.4 and I can now see Auto-mute and everything is working 100%.

As I am not as techy as I would have liked to have been I just used the following commands in terminal, which started off the process to upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 pre alpha release. The system is extremely stable even after the updates, but what it does aside from upgrading over 1000 files is that is also installs Kernel 3.4. If you are happy to proceed then use the following commands.

sudo sed -i 's/precise/quantal/g' /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Otherwise wait for the release of kernel 3.4 for 12.04

I would say this was fixed now.

One can use Ubuntu mainline kernel ppa: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-precise/

I don't think that it's a good idea to mark this bug as "fix committed" just because it is fixed in a mainline kernel. Mainline kernels are for trying things out and this "fix" will not propagate into normal 12.04 updates, so will not fix the problem for the majority of users. Even if you do use this kernel, you will not get any kernel security updates from the supported 12.04 kernel (currently 3.2.0-24).

I have exactly the same problem (speakers don't mute when headphone jack inserted), but I'm not using an Acer. Would my information most usefully go in this bug report, or should I start a new one? It would seem silly to have a new report for every bit of hardware if there is a problem common to many platforms, on the other hand it would be good not to confuse two different causes if this particular one is Acer-specific.

How do I disable auto-mute?

I'm a ubuntu noob.

Speakers work fine, but plugging in headphones = no audio. Take it out and speakers work fine again.

Checked alsamixer, saw that the head phone jack was "muted" (MM) and 0.
If I make it (00), and up the volume, the headphones work.

Unplug headphones and plug back in, and it's muted once again (MM).

True 5.1-channel surround sound output.

if the notebbok has 5.1 internal speakers and three audio jacks for 5.1 external speakers

it is confusing to have the channel mode switch

It does not have three audio jacks, Raymond. It has only one, for analogue stereo output. Digital output to external devices is available through HTMI.

What Raymond is getting at is there are 3 jacks on the lefthand side. One
is for Headphones/Digital, Line In and Microphone. Either of these ports
can be configured to whatever pulse audio want them to be. The HDMI
digital sound comes from the NVIDIA soundchip built into the NVIDIA 9600M
graphics card. Because there are 2 sound cards in the Aspire 8930 I think
pulseaudio gets a little confused which one to auto-mute on startup.

To enable disable auto-mute open up a terminal and type alsamixer it can be
switched on/off there.

For my Acer Aspire 8930G I have the pulseaudio output set to Stereo Duplex,
everything seems to be working just fine with that setting. I am now
running 12.10 Beta 2

Indeed it does have internal 5.1 speakers, Raymond. What I didn't know before now was what yourself and Shanekpiper seem to have indicated; namely that the 3 external jacks are configurable by pulse audio to allow external 5.1 speakers to be connected. I had just assumed that the "mic" and "line in" jacks were dealt with as mic and line in.
As regards the bug, I'm now running Linux Mint 13 32bit (with pulseaudio version 1.1) so all I'm able to add to this bug report is that there is no problem with this setup.

refer to the above patch, the internal speakers are at node 0x14, 0x1b and 0x16 hp at node 0x15

do you mean plug headphone does not mute all speakers since there is only one speaker node at your codec info ?

for the desktop the line in jack and the mic jack at rear panel can be retasked as output to support 5.1

but you need to find out the pin complex of the internal speakers and set the correct pin default by pin fixup or early patching so that the driver know that the notebook has 6 speakers
