Bug Description

Hello,

I've just installed Ubunutu, and have no sound.
The sound control buttons on the laptopt appear to be working – volume bar increases and decreases after pressing them, but there's no sound.

I've done the steps at https://help.ubuntu.com/11.10/ubuntu-help/sound-nosound.html, and it seems that my sound card is not detected. I have this laptop for a long time alreadyt so I don't know and can't find the name of the sound card.

The sound actually dissapeared a few months ago. I was using opensuse 11 then. Sometimes the sound would come back for a few minutes, and dissapear again. I was hoping that a new operating system might solve it. Sound worked during the instalation process though.

I realise that there similar bug reports, but they are all quite old, so I decided to make a new one. Sorry if that's not the right thing to do.

Thank you for your help,

Andrius

Is it possible that the sound is disabled in the bios?

Also, does lspci see the card?
In fact, please run this command to collect the missing info:

Dave Lentz,

I checked the bios, but I wasn't able to find where sound might be enabled/disabled. Could you give me a few directions where I should look?

Since apport is not attaching pcimultimedia.txt, I'm guessing your card doesn't show in lspci.. :(

I looked at the manual and I don't think your BIOS has an option to disable/enable the codec.
I'm running out of ideas (other than resetting the BIOS and /or updating it). I guess you could also try booting with acpi=noieq parameter.

Hopefully, a dev will have some clearer ideas..

Erm, not really. What is strange that sound suddenly starts working sometimes (very rarely), and then disappears again. This week it was working for three full days or so, but then disapeared again this morning.

There is properly a fix for your problem it Ubuntu12.04. At this time it is not planned as far as I can see to backport it to the kernel3.0.x serie and with this to oneiric.

So, the chance is bad to get this fixed in oneiric.

Is it possible to you to make a distribution upgrade to 12.04? And install after this also the proposed upgrades until you reached kernel 3.2.26.x?

This may help out of the box.

If you want to do, make a backup first of your system.(dejadup). Sometimes the process fails.

Hello,

a quick update. Upgrading to 12.04 did not solve the problem, sound isn't working anyway. But this is no longer important for me, as I won't be using this laptop anymore.
