Bug Description

Installed 11.10 on two systems - a desktop and a laptop. On the desktop the sound is OK, while on the laptop, I get horrible lags and skips on all audio. If playing a movie and the soundcard is enabled, the video becomes choppy too.
Tried both an upgraded system (from 11.04) and a clean install, same problem.

The sound is *always* choppy, I get bursts of sound for about 1/2 second then maybe 1 second of silence. The "bursts of sound" appear to come in random order, too.

The whole system is totally unable to perform any multimedia task as is now (i.e. playing music, playing videos, playing games).

Sound card is a n ExpressCard card:
cristian@cristian-laptop:~$ lspci | grep Audio
06:00.0 PCI bridge: Creative Labs [SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG PCI to PCIe Bridge
07:00.0 Audio device: Creative Labs [SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG
I attached the pulseaudio log taken during a choppy audio playback.

Restricted drivers in use:
Broadcom STA wireless driver,
nVidia accelerated graphics driver.

If any further info is needed I'll post here.

Cristian

Thanks for your bug report. I'll target this to alsa-driver for now so we can get an apport hook, but this may be suited to pulseaudio or possibly the kernel as well. In any case, could you please run the following command in a terminal on your laptop and then change the status of this bug back to new:
apport-collect 887913

That will add some more system information and log files to your report so that someone more familiar with debugging sound issues can diagnose the problem. Thanks in advance.

Hi Cristian

I have experienced similar issues but these have been quickly resolved. Rebooting a couple of times immediately following install/upgrade has settled most things down for me. Can you also check the Sound Settings>Applications tab to see if the running sound application (Banshee for example) is shown when running. Check the Hardware tab and set to Analogue Stereo Duplex for now. On the Output tab make sure the Connector is set to Analogue Output.

Please let us know how you get on.

OK, I uploaded the extra info and changed back to "new".
But something really weird happened. This system has had this problem since the beginning (I think I updated it when Oneiric was RC1), and it's been used every day since, so it's been rebooted dozens of times.
But now, things have changed. Since maybe 30 minutes, now if I play an audio file, for the first time in weeks, it plays well. BUT - the small speaker icon on the top bar shows all dashes (like the volume is zero) and if I go to Sound Settings, there is no hardware detected there - as if I had no card at all. All the tabs show just nothing. And I can't change the volume in any way. I'm really confused.
I haven't tried booting the other installation (the clean install), I will do shortly and report back...

The only thing I did (that I can think of) is the procedure to have a verbose log of Pulseaudio, but I don't know if it might have changed something...

I'm now posting from the other boot, the "clean" install. Here the sound is still choppy, but the volume works and "sound settings" shows the sound card in all the tabs.
I'm uploading again the apport details to see if there are obvious differences.

Hi I can also confirm exactly same problem on my system with exactly same config.

adrian@adrian-KZ854AV-ABA-m9300t:~$ lspci|grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
03:00.0 PCI bridge: Creative Labs [SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG PCI to PCIe Bridge
04:00.0 Audio device: Creative Labs [SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG

It was working fine in the previous 11.04 Ubuntu, but after I upgraded I am facing choppy audio with Choppy Video (using gstreamer i guess). If I try VLC video is smooth but audio is still choppy.

I will also be happy to help anyway I can.

I'm pretty sure I'm having the same if not extremely similar issues. On upgrade to 11.10 all media, even the login sound, plays back choppy/mixed up.

I was thinking all along that something probably regressed in the Kernel.

But I just recently saw this post -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/877509

It seems running ubuntu-bug and letting it play the test audio seems to fix the audio issue . And this worked for me.
So now I am doubting if this is a kernel bug or just a configuration issue somewhere.

Greetings.

Per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/877509 , I have tried ubuntu-bug and the tone tests, but that did not resolve the issue.

As of right now, my system effectively has no audio or video (as video freezes, becomes choppy, or skips).

An observation, when logged into pandora dot com, the song changes every few seconds, as though the entire track was listened to and the next track is played ... I am suprised the site did not say i was using too many songs in too short of a time.

launchpad.net had an error when i was trying to flag Bug #877509 as one that i am also experiencing.

Please let me know if there is anything i can do to help resolve this issue. Thank you in advance.
