It has to do with the most recent updates. I formatted my SSD, re-installed Ubuntu 10.04.0 and the audio was fine. Did the slew of most recent updates and now my audio is gone again.

Temp solution:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

*After amending alsa-base.conf, make sure you write the added line into the file ("ctrl-O" I think? ...it's listed at the bottom)

After running "sudo alsa force-reload" - restart and everything should be fine. I'd rather an update fix, just in case the next update causes the same problem, but this seems to work for now.

Thanks skyssa! Here is the simple fix for those who have the issue on the Dell Mini 9:-

Edit the file alsa-base.conf by running the following command:-

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Add this line to the end of the file, save, and reboot

options snd-hda-intel model=dell

I also use a Dell Mini 9 and have lost sound after the last three kernel updates, but this work for me. Should this eliminate the problem for future kernel upgrades?
