Alsa: Speaker sound won't mute when headphone is plugged in, plus other annoyances

Bug Description

The default installation of Oneiric Oncelot right now messes up with sound configuration on the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard, which has a ALC892 8-channel HD Audio Codec. Sound quality is weird ("scratchy", also seems like sometimes the songs are out of tune or at different pitch). Besides that, plugging headphones to front connector won't mute the external speakers.

I had no success changing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as mentioned in so many bug reports and in Alsa Project web site.

This is a fairly new and "high-end" AM3(+) motherboard and its popular with AMD Phenom users, maybe some other people will see the same problem.

Regards,
Effenberg
