I reinstalled the system (x64 ubuntu 11.04) from the live CD, but unticked automatic updates. Now I have sound back. I have installed all the recommended updates except for:

--------------------------------------
Important security updates
--------------------------------------

linux-generic
linux-headers-2.6.38-10
linux-headers-2.6.38-10-generic
linux-headers-generic
linux-image-2.6.38-10-generic
linux-image-generic
linux-libc-dev

--------------------------------------
Recommended updates
--------------------------------------

libpulse-browse0
libpulse-mainloop-glib0
libpulse0
pulseaudio
pulseaudio-esound-compat
pulseaudio-module-bluetooth
pulseaudio-module-gconf
pulseaudio-module-x11
pulseaudio-utils

and I still have sound on my system. I don't want to install any of these yet incase my sound disappears again. If you would like I can try and generate some other output (like that of the first post) if that would be useful in identifying the cause of the original problem.

Just as a follow up: I've installed all the pulse audio and kernel updates, and my sound is still working. The only app that I haven't installed (that was installed previously when sound stopped working) is WINE.

Also have this bug. Sound was working fine with Natty. After an upgrade to Oneiric (month ago) it was also working. As of today sound stopped working. I have:

ii alsa-base 1.0.24+dfsg-0ubuntu2 ALSA driver configuration files
ii alsa-utils 1.0.24.2-0ubuntu7 Utilities for configuring and using ALSA

% uname -a
Linux x86 3.0.0-12-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 23 21:23:39 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Comment to #3: I do not use Wine at all and still have sound problems.

The only way I could resolve this problem was reinstalling the entire system. Then going through each update and recording whether the update broke my sound or not.. for some reason, they all installed and I didn't lose sounds, so it must have been wine.

OK, this bug no longer affects me. With the oneiric updates as of today, the sound works again. I saw updates of pulseaudio, but I'm not sure if they are related.

@jpr0: Maybe you should update and check again...
