Bug Description
10.10 Maverick Meerkat
Latest from repository
Dell Inspiron 1545
The Sound sometimes disappears at random times and is usually fixed by rebooting the system. I expect it to be always running, and it is a pain when doing something important.

I had this problem several times, after my laptop ran for a while (not sure if it only happened after hibernating the system). So far the only solution was to reboot. I was reading many help pages, wiki and forum entries, tried tons of things, and finally found this solving my issue, in terminal type:
sudo alsa force-reload
Maybe it also helps the OP?
