thanks

A dependency on
  coreutils | stat
will resolve this possible problem that might occur with partial
upgrades from Debian 3.0 to Debian 3.1 .

Subject: alsa-base relies on optional package stat

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.5a

The script /etc/apm/event.d/alsa in the alsa-base package
requires the command "stat" to be working, but the stat
Debian package is optional. Either the script is to be changed
or alsa-base is to be made dependent on stat.

Best wishes
  Volker

thanks

apt ensures that essential packages are installed. The only reason to add a
dependency would be to allow this package to be installed on woody, which I
don't think is possible anyway due to conflicts.

Essential: yes

coreutils provides stat, and is Essential, which means no dependancy
is required.
