sound through speakers even though headphones are connected, no sound on headphones

i've bought this computer a few weeks ago.
i installed ubuntu from a cd image, that i downloaded from the site
however, like my old computer, there is a problem with the sound device
i can't seem to get any sound on my headphones! but worst, it doesn't even cut the speakers when i plug the headphones in...
my computer is a toshiba satellite l650-18c.
i'm new to all this, so if you can help, explain it as if i were a child :S

Installed new modules, didn't help. Tried changing the model in alsa-base.conf to "toshiba","toshiba-satellite","satellite",even tried "auto" and "laptop" but to no avail. (Using Toshiba L650 too)

This is fixed in newer versions of Ubuntu for Toshiba Satellite L650.
Verified working for version 12.10.
