Please try removing ~/.pulse* and using `killall pulseaudio'.

Deleted ~/.pulse and did 'killall pulseaudio'.

Noticed that ~/.pulse recreate itself after typing in 'killall pulseaudio' (is that supposed to happen?)

No sound yet.. >.<

Anugerah, try to pass "auto" model to snd-hda-intel driver.

I use customized 2.6.36 kernel (no modules) on Gentoo.

If Ubuntu kernel use snd-hda-intel as module, try this in module configuration file (/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base ?). Then reboot or restart alsa:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Hope this helps, Tomas

Possible regression in ALSA, so I reported this (https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=5176).

You should recreate /etc/asound.state.
