Please try linux-backports-modules-alsa-maverick-generic.

Can you run "apport-collect 664062" while running the backports driver?

Installed a minimal (no X, no nothing) Debian Squeeze with enough sw to play audio. alsa-base, mpg321 and tested the sound problem.

Sound works with linux-image-2.6.30-2-amd64, but not with linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64. Maybe the Debian 2.6.32 has extra patches that cause the problem because the vanilla 2.6.32 works.

alsamixer has different sliders with the 2 above kernels, so there is definitely something different with those kernels.

Ok, after some studying found out that the front and rear outputs work independently and the front has 2 different ways of usage hda and ac97. My case is a bit older than the motherboard and doesn't support hda on the front panel. There is a bios setting for the type of front panel (hda/ac97). when I changed the setting to ac97 sound started working. Maybe the old drivers used the ac97 setting even if the bios setting had been wrong since when I built this system.

This bug's summary should be rewritten to: "no sound from front output when upgrading from lucid to maverick" and status to invalid.
