Bishwa, please don't file more than one bug for the same issue. Can you please try the latest snapshot according to these instructions: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules , reboot, and see if it helps? I know there has been some sony vaio related fixes lately.

Also can you clarify whether headphones work, internal speakers work, or none of them?

Well, I am sorry if I have caused you any trouble by posting the bugs again and again.I am really new to this Linux OS, and with the problem it created I formatted and installed Linux 3 times. This problem is really causing me a lot of trouble.
In my laptop every thing is working fine, except for the sound, neither in laptop speakers nor in the headphones. While, the microphone seems to be working, because as I recorded my voice and saved it in the other directory and played via. windows7 I could hear my voice, which explains that the problem is with the output sound.
I am going to give a try with new solution you have given me.I will just write to you back in a while, when the operation is done.
Thanks,Bishwa

Well, I am sorry if I have caused you any trouble by posting this particular bugs again and again.I am new to this Linux OS, and this problem, I am not really able to handle it. I formatted and installed Linux 3 times. In my laptop every thing is working fine, except for the sound (both in laptop speakers and also in the headphones I hear no sound)While, the microphone seems to be working, because as I recorded my voice and saved it in the other directory and played via. windows7 I could hear my voice, which explains that the problem is with the output sound.I also tried the following latest snapshot instructions,
> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules , reboot,The file got downloaded but there was message saying that some downloads werenot successful or some old updates were used instead. But, it didn't solved the problem. Rather, when I opened Gnomealsamixer there appeared to be two SPDIF and SPDIF1.Then I tried to uninstall the this latest AlsaDriverModules but there was message saying something was locked and if I was the administrator.I hope this information will help. Thanks you,Bishwa

Hi Bishwa,

There was a "sudo" missing in some of the commands in the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules - I have updated that now, so if you tried installing via the command line: please retry, and also make sure any other package manager is open (e g synaptic or ubuntu-software-center) while installing or uninstalling.

Thanks,
I installed the update as you mentioned, until there was no progress. Then I rebooted the computer, and still there was the same problem. After which I unistalled this recently installed update from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules - Iand rebooted again and the miracle happened. There was sound in my Sony VAIO.
Thanks you so much.

Hi,

I have come back again with the problem of the same kind (I don't hear any audio sound in my earphones as well as in my laptop speakers). I tried using this method provided by you previously but it doesn't seem to work. This time I installed a fresh copy of ubuntu 10.10 and I came up with the same problem. This time there is some more problem; I have to login through the recovery mode to get in to the linux OS (use the recovery mode for just one session). The default mode of linux doesn't seem to load, displaying the message that the resolution isn't supported.

I had a good support from you people last time. I am sure you can find a way out for this problem too, this time.
My laptop is of the same version Sony VAIO VPCEB21FG.

Thanks,
Bishwa
