EMU 0202 USB card not initialized often.

I used to get unstable initialization, but now EMU-0202 no longer works for me at all.
Backports with alsa-drivers used to provide 96Khz sampling, but now backports just causes 100% CPU hang as soon as the EMU-0202 is connected.
