Looking at your kernel version, it seems as if you don't have all of the latest updates installed. Can you run update manager and install all the updates and see if that works? Can you try the Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" Live CD and see if that works?
Otherwise, please run apport-collect 581027 and tell us which system you ran it on.
