That quirk seems odd. Shouldn't you be using a different quirk? The Dell quirks tend to be tied to their BIOSes...

It does seem odd that a dell quirk would work for this model. This quirk can be found (along with a confirmation) on this launchpad answer:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/80818

Another possible choice given on that answer is:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 enable_msi=1

Now what can be tested is the hp-m4 option. As well, we can check the source to see what the difference is between these the "dell-m4-1" model and the "hp-m4" model.

@komputes

The second quirk changing the option model to hp-m4 does not work.

Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules. Note that you should test first without a model quirk.

10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS and this bug is still present in my same laptop. The quirk still works great though. I would have thought this would have been fixed in two years.

James' quirck worked.

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1 enable_msi=1

in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
did the trick

*** i did not try the other line in James' quirck
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
option.
