Bug Description

1. Neither system-sounds nor sounds from Adobe flashplayer nor from the system audio-test can be heard.

2. In Sound Preferences|Input, the level-bar moves when I speak. So input appears to work. (But not output).

3. In Sound Preferences|Output, I tried several connector settings. No sound with any setting.

4. Here's an lsmod:

snd_intel8x0 30168 2
snd_ac97_codec 101216 1 snd_intel8x0
ac97_bus 1532 1 snd_ac97_codec

Hi Mark,

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 489816

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

I am a programmer specializing in low-level software that controls hardware. So although I reported this bug, I would also like to help fix it if possible. Please email me if I can help.

There are millions of semi-legacy computers around which use the Intel 865 and 875 chipsets. According to motherboard reviews from back then, Linux audio worked. So there's probably some detail that broke in the meantime. Today, I tested both of these chipsets with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and still no audio on both, although lspci shows the AC'97 device and lsmod shows the various snd* drivers loaded.
