I don't know how to do this. I am a brand new user of UBUNTU. I love it but
I'm just learning how to do everything. Could you give me directions,
please?

There are a couple ways:

1) Use System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager to install
"linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic"
2) Open Applications > Accessories > Terminal, and use: sudo apt-get
install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic

In both cases, you'll need to reboot after installing the package.

Thanks for your advice. I ended up wiping out the 9.10 and reinstalling the
8.4. Now everything is working fine. I think it's because this UBUNT
version was made specifically for the Dell Inspiron Mini (or so I've been
told).

Hi lislit219,

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 479262

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.

unflag my peroblem but I did not understand the directions. I was able to

I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 10, sound Silicon Image SiI1392 HDMI.
Internal microphone not working on Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10.
I installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and reboot as said Daniel T Chen on post #4.
Then in Terminal run alsamixer, and configure de volumes, using tab, rows, and 'm' key to 'on'-'off'.
Sound and microphone are working now.
Thank you Daniel T Chen.
