mimomox, this could be for a couple of reasons. First, could you please double-check to see if all output devices in the audio mixer are unmuted (not just turned up)? Sometimes one device being muted will prevent other unmuted devices from working.

If that doesn't work, try installing the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic package and rebooting. Again, installation of this package may cause some devices to become muted (or new devices are set to mute by default), so they need to be unmuted after the first reboot.

Let me know how that works.

Thank you WeatherGod for being with me.

After installing

linux-backports-modules-alsa-
karmic-generic package

it works, even if at maximum level volume remains low. Internal
microphone is in the web cam QuickCam Messenger,
which neither liked Ubuntu 9.4 nor 9.10 but tolerated the previous. In
<sound preferences> QuickCam has input but no output.
Grazie, mimomox

Ok, it is a good thing that we have the sound working to a point. We can deal with the sound level issue by referring this bug report to the sound drivers people who are building a database of useful sound levels for different hardware.

This is another reporter who got the sound working, but the speakers are too quiet. Maybe another for the database?

Hi mimomox,

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 474304

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.
