I seem to have a similar problem with my ibm R51. No sound and system goes in coma - black screen and mouse still visible but fixed - 5 sec. after I ask for a system test. I hear no beep in boot, so maybe a hardware error, but I would have liked system test to tell me instead of deserting. Anyway, I am new on Ubuntu, and I like it so far.
