Is this symptom reproducible after installing
linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic and rebooting?

No. Sound still only works if I plug in my headphones.

Hi DavidBaucum,

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 461631

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

This attached apport is on 9.10, not 10.04 Beta. I didn't realize running that command would attach the information to this bug automatically.
I'll do another apport once I've finished downloading 10.04 Beta.

This bug should be fixed in the upstream 3.11 kernel as well as the upstream 3.10.4 kernel. The relevant commit in the 3.10.4 kernel is:

commit 0d9230a39086b5f183fda1091eb078a67be01f05
Author: Takashi Iwai
Date: Fri Jul 19 08:02:25 2013 +0200

ALSA: hda - Remove NO_PRESENCE bit override for Dell 1420n Laptop

    commit f3e351eef3a7fd1e36a3e18d4f2f069b00deb23c upstream.

The quirk for Dell laptops with STAC9228 overrides the pin default
config of NID 0x0f to the value with AC_DEFCFG_MISC_NO_PRESENCE bit
on. I'm not quite sure why this was done so, but can guess that this
was introduced for avoiding this to be muted by another headphone
plug. Now, after transition to the generic parser, this workaround
rather causes a problem (notably as unexpected speaker mutes) because
the pin is seen as if it's always plugged in.

Since the generic parser can handle multiple headphone plugging
gracefully, we can get rid of this override now.

This laptop is running Raring alpha releases. When can I expect the new kernel that fixes thus to hit so that I can confirm close this bug?

The 3.11 kernle hit Ubuntu 13.10 a couple days ago, but it was causing all sorts of weirdness, like my sound devices where disappearing. I updated today and I was just back to no playing. On a hunch I ran alsamixer. All the settings looked fine, but just playing around I turned off "Auto-Mute Mod" and now sound is working just fine.
