Bug Description

Binary package hint: alsa-base

The latest macbooks using Intel/Nvidia HD sound will not work with this driver version 1.0.20 for 'snd_hda_intel'.

The drivers will load and the mods will be recognized but there will be no sound.

The latest macbooks need the alsa-driver version 1.0.21 installed to have sound working. This is even documented on Ubuntu's own Wiki.

I hope the Ubuntu team will update Karmic to the alsa-driver version of 1.0.21 before Karmic goes final.

THANK YOU

It is true, and affecting also Macbooks Pro 5,3.

You can always build it from source from wget ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/snapshot/alsa-driver-unstable-snapshot.tar.gz but that is not a good solution for most users.

Furthermore, since the elimination of the linux-restricted-modules package I haven't been able to make it work again.

Gorka, I tried building it from source from there (following details from the documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro5-5/Karmic#Sound , but not luck either.
No sound yet, after I upgraded to karmic beta

Gorka you have to make sure you unmute the sound, by default Alsa might mute the sound and then you also have to go the system preferences for sound and make sure to change the sound settings, picking a different sound option.

I don't remember which one I used in the Sound options but it was the bottom setting for Something Duplex...

@DasFox, I know about the unmuting part. The thing was that there was no hardware to unmute.

Now, with 2.6.31.12 it works again (builging from source).

@Xavi, in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/84686 there are instructions to follow. Make sure to replace the number of the kernel by what you are using. And that you have build-essential installed.

Any plan to take care of this before the release of Karmic?

This issue is also affecting me, also x64 bit, whether on the liveCD or actual installation.

Just tried it with the 64-bit RC on my Macbook Pro 5.5 and it currently is not working.

Also reproducible with linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic and a reboot?

Well, I just reinstalled the kernel and installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic ... Well, the sound works on reboot, which is quite surprising. I'll wait until next kernel upgrade to open the champagne though...

On the negative note, the micro is not working in Empathy, more research is needed.

Thanks for the tip.

Please make sure you ahve an output + input profile set in the hardware tab of the volume control preferences. Please also make sure you have the correct input device selected under the input tab in the same volume control preferences.

Under the Mackbook Pro 5.5 the hardware tab has the following:

Internal Audio
1 Output/1 Input
Analog Stereo Duplex

This is the incorrect hardware.

Forgot to add to the above. The is the only option for me under the hardware tab.

Since Kernel .18, no more sound for me. I am stuck with .17. Nothing in the hardware tab. Building alsa unstable does not work either.
