I am sorry to inform you that after a few second since any sound produced by the speakers, I hear clicks as if Ubuntu was constantly uninitialising the sound card. Then when another sound is to be produced the system click and initialises the sound card again (the same sound you hear at boot time).

It's very annoying.

If a window sound is produced a second or two after the first attempt, you can actually hear a correct sound instead of the click.

I solved this Problem with karmic by turning "Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack" ON. This was not possible with the normal GUI tools (there I couldn't even see this option, only some abstract pulseaudio options) or in the normal comandline alsamixer (the option is there, but I couldn't change it).
Only in alsamixergui I could turn it ON.

I think for this card the option hase to be activated (automaticly?!?).
Other user of this card have the same problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1146513&highlight=audigy+4+no+sound&page=2

i'm on Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 with an creative adigy 4 pro.

I'm going to confirm this. The Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack is disabled by default. It used to be enabled by default on previous Ubuntu releases. I couldn't find any options for this in the Sound preferences or in alsamixer, or if there is a setting it's not very obvious. I had to install gnome-alsamixer to find the check box for the Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack.

Again, we can't make the change here, because there are some codec
revisions that require the mixer element to be *muted* to get sound.

It's a hardware quirk, and we may be able to work around it in
alsa-kernel/linux.

I would like to add that (in my system) enabling Analog/Digital Output Jack not only restores multichannel sound but also makes the mixer sliders functional with the SB0610 soundcard in Karmic (I believe the problem with the mixer has been reported as an unrelated bug somewhere). However there is a price: noticeably higher noise and distortion levels. So at least for stereo listening I would recommend selecting "Digital Stereo Duplex (IEC958)" and leaving the Analog/Digital Output Jack disabled.

Installing OSSv4 solved these problems with SB0610 for me.

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 440277

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.

Spock112, look at the appropriate control:

Simple mixer control 'Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined penum
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [off]

So you need to unmute it, just as you stated in comment 5. However, this cannot be unmuted by default; it will break others' audible sound by default.
