Bug Description

On my Macbook Pro 17" Unibody, by default sound doesn't work at all. Quirking snd_hda_intel with model=mb5 will make it output sound, but headphones and speakers are controlled by separate volume sliders. Plugging in headphones does not mute the speakers.

I have managed how to manually mute internal speaker without muting headphones:
I dropped down to 0 the volume of Front/Surround/LFE (not muted them, otherwise also headphones will mute) and after un-mute the HP channel and rise volume.

A strange behaviour i noticed is that if I mute the master channel with alsamixer, and after un-mute it, the sound isn't restored. I must use the gnome volume applet to un-mute the soundcard to re-hear sounds (pulse issue?)

Scorp, please file a separate bug using "ubuntu-bug alsa-base".

Similar problem with hp nc8230 (intel CPU). Plugging in headphones doesn't mute the speaker. alsamixer says Headphone jack sense [Off].

Found the headphone jack sense option. Go to terminal and type in "alsamixer" then the option that says "Headphone Jack Sense" (You may not be able to view the entire phrase, but it "should" be the 3rd option. Move over to that option with the arrow keys and then hit m to activate the option.

There is no jack sense option on the MBP17" Unibody which is what I filed the bug for. If you have another machine please file your own bug.

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 437034

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.

My situation is another variation of this problem. I have an Asus gv50t, nvidia chipset. I'll send my apport-collect data. I see a headphone checkbox in gnome-mixer. I don't see a jack sense switch. The same is true for alsa-mixer. I get sound in my headphone if I plug the jack in part way. With it plugged in like that, I can mute the computer speaker and still hear sound in my headphone. The speaker slider controls the headphone volume. If I put the jack all the way in, both the headphone and speaker go dead.

I just tried updating to the latest alsa source by using a ppa build, http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/unstable/ubuntu karmic main. No change.
