Bug Description

Audio works fine after a reboot or when my computer is turned on after being shut down normally. However, when I hibernate (choosing "Hibernate" from the "System>Shut Down" menu) and start up my computer there's no audio.

rune@runescomp:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

The following command fixes the problem:

sudo alsa force-reload

It seems this is a duplicate of bug #11149, but I'm not sure. I use a different sound module than that of bug #11149.

Snap. Same.

IBM T21 laptop. Can force reload but would really appreciate a fix. Can supply other details as requested but technical knowledge not amazing...

"ubuntu-bug -p packagename" via command line does not work under Karmic.

Please advise.

I having similiar conditions too.
My sound card is gone from pulseaudio preferences.
System -> Prefrences -> Sound -> hardware.

This is happens after I try the hibernate.

But it can fixed by typing command
$sudo alsa force-reload

Now I put that command on /etc/rc.local. I know that's a little tricky. Is there any fix for this?

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 425196

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Brad,
This is still an issue with the current kernel in Karmic, yes.
I presume I won't be able to test this from a Live CD, since it requires me to hibernate the system and start it up again.
If this is the case, will installing the latest upstream kernel, and executing the command you mention, be sufficient to collect the necessary additional information and add it to this bug report? Or is it necessary to install the development release of Lucid, alongside Karmic which I am running now?

Also, I'm thinking of converting to 64-bit instead of 32-bit as I'm running now.
Will debug information from a 64-bit system be relevant to this bug report?

I installed Lucid (32-bit), and this bug is still present running the current kernel:

Linux runescomp 2.6.32-19-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Wed Mar 31 17:46:20 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

but now the "sudo alsa force-reload"-command doesn't fix the issue, only a reboot works to get the sounds back.

I am unable to check if the newest upstream kernel works (2.6.34-020634rc3-generic), because it hangs when I try to hibernate.

Not a problem for me any more with current patched Maveric install. (Though another bug is distortion with Pidgin notifications, but will raise another case if persistent.)

I think it could of been that the audio was resuming muted from hibernate/sleep mode.

Anyway, thanks for all your hard work!

This is no longer an issue for me either, using the kernel from the Ubuntu Kernel PPA:

    rune@runescomp:~$ uname -a
    Linux runescomp 2.6.35-19-generic #25~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Aug 25 04:24:28 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
