Bug Description

I cant get sound in 2 and more java programs at once using youtube videos, runescape.com (game) and frostwire (preview or library reproduce). I only got sound in 1 of them, example: if i use youtube, the other are without sound, if i play runescape, i dont get sound in youtube or frost, and viceversa when using frostwire. The real annoying thing is than if I am playing runescape, i cant let a youtube video charging because it will have no sound, and I have to restart the firefox to get sound in youtube, losing the video charged data. For the frostwire and any other java app than uses sound, I have to quit the program, quit the firefox, and then open the program again.

Confirmed. Tested Frostwire and Youtube, on kubuntu 9.04 32-bit. Only one outputs sound at a time.

Just installed ubuntu-desktop, so I can also confirmed this happens in KDE and GNOME.

See:

In other words, the java plugin uses oss emulation exclusively, and
your sound hardware does not support native multiopen.

In the queue for karmic+1 is osspd, so cuse will be used to route
/dev/dsp to pulse.

As explained on IRC, it requires hardware support in Linux
(specifically "it" refers to muxing /dev/dsp and alsa concurrent
playback using pcm multiopen).

It affects me also, Ubuntu Karmic. I too am playing Runescape and I can't get sound from both Java and SMPlayer/Exaile/Flash. If I run Runescape first, I have sound in Runescape, but not in my video players, audio players, Flash-animations and sites like YouTube and vice versa: if any of the previous is running before I start Runescape, I have no sound in Runescape.

I had this problem in Ubuntu 9.04 also. Previously to 9.04, I have been using Kubuntu 8.04 and there everything worked just fine, no sound issues whatsoever.

At the moment, I am googling for the answer how to enable sound in Java in the same time with other apps. No solutions found so far or similar complaints, only this page.
