Bug Description

When the volume sliders are brought to the bottom, no sound should be audible. When I bring the sound down to minimum (whether with GNOME or alsamixer), sound is still audible. I am using Dapper x86. This has been occuring since Warty. To make audio no longer audible, I must also bring the PCM mixer down to minimum, or "Mute" the master.

I guess there's two options to fixing this:
a) Fix the problem at the root: in alsa.
b) When the volume drops to 0 in alsamixer or gnome, "mute" the master.

I am using a Creative SB Live.

I'm having the same problem; i've got an AC97 soundcard, using dapper (latest version) - bringing the volume to 0 with my multimedia keyboard shows the "mute" logo but doesn't mute the sound; whereas the mute button is working fine.

Unbelievably I can confirm this on my SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07) . I had to turn amplifaction on my stereo up extremely high to confirm but there was some very quiet sound still coming out despite the gnome mixer applet reporting that the volume was muted.

This is also the case for my Intel device. The device does actually mute if mute is selected (by right clicking).

I can confirm as well using an onboard AC97 audio chipset (VIA 8235 to be specific). Except on my speakers, even if the volume isn't physically set that high on the speakers, I still hear a decent amount of audio when the sound is set to 0. Muting the master in the Volume Control center or by using the Mute key on my keyboard (mapped to Mute, obviously) takes care of the problem.

Somebody suggested this information might help:

sean@honeypot:~$ lspci | grep audio
0000:00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
